A Victorian Tea Time Spread
One of our favorite activities we include in this curriculum is a Tea Time Recipe section chock-full of foods that would have been created and eaten in the Victorian Era. Afternoon tea time was an important part of the Victorian Era, with everyone from nobles and aristocrats to the factory workers of the Industrial Revolution pausing to take tea during the day to recharge for the hours ahead. Create a tea time recipe each week and serve with tea, using the time to read through our reading selection we have paired with each recipe to create an engaging and lovely learning experience!

Add a Victorian Poem to Your Tea Time:

Additionally, we created copywork sheets from four of the poems for ages that range from primary through high school!
Patience Taught by Nature
by Elizabeth Barrett Browning
“O Dreary life!” we cry, “O dreary life!”
And still the generations of the birds
Sing through our sighing, and the flocks and herds
Serenely live while we are keeping strife
With Heaven’s true purpose in us, as a knife
Against which we may struggle. Ocean girds
Unslackened the dry land: savannah-swards
Unweary sweep: hills watch, unworn; and rife
Meek leaves drop yearly from the forest-trees,
To show, above, the unwasted stars that pass
In their old glory. O thou God of old!
Grant me some smaller grace than comes to these;—
But so much patience, as a blade of grass
Grows by contented through the heat and cold.

Have a Victorian Paint Party!
Included in this lesson is an art lesson inspired by a beautiful wallpaper design by William Morris. Morris is best known as a Victorian Era designer and a leader of the Arts & Crafts Movement. With his company, Morris & Co., he advocated for “handmade production” that went against the grain of the era’s industrial progress. His company created furniture, wallpapers, carpets, embroiders, tapestries, tiles, book designs, and more.
Morris famously said, “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”
During this art lesson, we discuss pattern design, motifs, and negative space using his wallpaper, Peacock & Dragon, as our inspiration piece. So grab a cup of tea and a biscuit and start creating!
