Add a Poem to Your Tea Time:
We have included several poetry selections from our featured poet, Osip Mandelstam, that we feel capture the spirit and resilience of the Russian people. Mandelstam was a Soviet Russian poet who was known for his writings against the government and his persistence in fighting against political persecution, and through his work, he left behind a legacy of courage and bravery in the face of oppression. Dive further into his story with our included biography, and explore his works in more depth with copywork of his poems for ages ranging from primary through high school. Here is a sample of one of our favorite pieces:
Alone I stare into the frost’s white face
by Osip Mandelstam
Alone I stare into the frost’s white face.
It’s going nowhere, and I—from nowhere.
Everything ironed flat, pleated without a wrinkle:
Miraculous, the breathing plain.
Meanwhile the sun squints at this starched poverty—
The squint itself consoled, at ease . . .
The ten-fold forest almost the same . . .
And snow crunches in the eyes, innocent, like clean bread.

Paint the Famous Saint Basil’s Cathedral!
In this curriculum, we have included an art lesson showing how to create Saint Basil’s Cathedral in markers, which is located in Moscow, and is one of the most important buildings to Russian history. It was constructed over the course of 5 years, from 1555 to 1561, however, all of it’s beautiful colors weren’t added until over a century later in 1683. The 9 pillars are built to look like pillars of fire, and the colors were meant to represent the throne of God, which is surrounded by a rainbow. It has now become one of the most famous Russian landmarks! So get out your markers, grab some snacks from our tea time recipes, and enjoy creating your own depiction of this beautiful piece of history!
