Anne of Green Gables Tea Time

There’s not a more memorable scene than that of Anne and the terrible mix-up in beverages at her tea party with Diana. A perfect example of why reading labels and everything in moderation are important values to learn!

Today we are celebrating the joys of tea with an Anne of Green Gables inspired tea party. Below you’ll find the recipes for scrumptious cutout sugar cookies decorated Anne style and a delightful Raspberry Cordial that won’t scandalize the preacher’s wife!

Anne of Green Gables Tea Time Cookie Recipe

Ingredients for perfect cutout cookies:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (gluten-free cup-for-cup flour works, too)
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 (2 sticks) cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar or flour, for rolling
  • Straw Hat Cookie Cutter (this one from Amazon is what we used)

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Whisk together dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

3. In a mixing bowl, blend the butter and sugar until creamy and light. Add egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract. Mix well. Slowly add dry ingredients and mix until combined. Dough may be a little crumbly.

4. Turn out the dough onto a surfaced sprinkled with powdered sugar or flour.

Press into a ball and then roll out to ¼ inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to create shapes. Carefully lift shaped cookies to the baking sheet. Using a flat spatula is recommended to help the cookies maintain their shape.

5. Bake cookies for 7 to 9 minutes. Do not brown the cookies. Allow cookies to cool for at least 8 minutes on the baking sheet before carefully removing to a cooling rack. Allow to completely cool before icing.

*Note: if you don’t want to make all 3 dozen 2-inch cookies, this dough freezes very well for up to 6 months. Just wrap what you want to save in cling wrap and store it in a labeled freezer bag.

How to Decorate Anne of Green Gables Cookies!

You will need cookie icing or royal icing (there’s a recipe in your Anne of Green Gables packet!) and spring colored sprinkles to decorate your cookies.

Anne of Green Gables Raspberry Cordial Recipe

Ingredients for Anne’s Raspberry Cordial:

  • 1 cup of raspberries (fresh or frozen) plus extra for garnish
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup fresh spring water
  • Cream soda for everyone at your tea party

Instructions:

To make your raspberry syrup, add the raspberries, sugar, and water to a saucepan over medium heat and bring to a low simmer. Simmer for 10 minutes, remove from heat, and let cool for 10 minutes.

Press the raspberry mixture through a fine sieve into a bowl. Discard the leftover seeds and stir the pulp and juice well. Refrigerate until ready to use.

To serve:

Add 1 TBS of raspberry syrup to each glass. Add a few ice cubes and top with cream soda and fresh raspberries if desired.
