Anne of Green Gables Handicraft

Welcome to our handicraft day in our 5 Days of Anne of Green Gables series! We’re delighted to have you join us for this fun, simple, and useful beginning sewing project.

Anne loved to help Marilla in the kitchen, which always required an apron to keep clothes clean. Unfortunately for Mr. & Mrs. Chester Ross from Spencerville (or Miss Stacy in the movie), Anne’s tendency to daydream in the kitchen led to a rather terrible but hilarious incident involving a custard sauce and a rodent.

Today we aren’t making pudding or sauce, but we will make a lovely apron to help keep your hands dry, clothes clean, and favorite utensils at hand.

For this 4-pocket apron, you will need two 18 or 20-inch cloth napkins with an autumn theme (or whatever theme you choose). The plaid ones we used are unavailable now, but you can find similar patterns on Amazon like these. For ease of use and washing, 100% cotton napkins work best.

We will be using simple, straight seams. There are no specific measurements as they would vary between napkin sizes, but the method is straightforward and works well.

Options:

  • You can divide the front into 3 sections to make 6 pockets instead of 4 larger pockets
  • You can make the tie by sewing together strips of extra napkins
  • You can embroidery a design on your apron or the waistband of the tie
  • You can leave off the second napkin and make a simple, straight apron
  • You can also use a dishtowel instead of a napkin for different texture/shape

Supplies:

  • Two 18-20″ cotton cloth napkins
  • 1.5 inch wide grosgrain ribbon, at least 4 yards
  • coordinating thread for your ribbon and napkin pattern
  • pins or clips (Amazon has some like I use in the video)
